Contract VS Part Time: What's better for freelancers?
If you're looking for a little more certainty in your freelance life, contract or part time work might appeal. Here's what helped me choose what suited me.
I've just taken 3 days a week part time job even though I have a contract for another client and also freelance on projects and in coaching.
Why did I choose part time when most freelancers tend to run away from the idea?
I find it easier to do permanent part time as it is lower cost and greater protection. E.g. less chance of contract ending, not needing my own separate insurance, having a regular pay day to work to, continued funding in the role, longer tenure, sick and holiday pay, and less burden with taxation management.
If I was contract, I'd probably breach my own self-care and uncoupling strategies way more and give loads more free overtime through speed and dedication.
I wanted to eliminate issues contracting often provides like:
late payment
poorly managed work schedules
lower influence on the work being outside the tent
The benefits include:
ownership over the work
a leadership role
good pay
another professional network
getting to explore a new sector (I’ve moved into NFP)
A choice like this is a personal decision. What works for me may not apply to you.
What I asked myself was this:
1. What could taking the role and doing it well mean for my overall career standing?
2. Would I have access to new networks and opportunities in the tent rather than as contract?
3. What level of influence would I have?
4. How could I manage my own tendency towards overwork effectively?
5. What do I lose going inside the tent? What do I gain?
What helps you make decisions like this? What do you prefer?

I have taken this option - freelance work dried up to a trickle, so I took on a part-time role for a 12 month contract - option to extend. It has certainly taken the heat off and I don't feel so frantic or stressed about the no-work-weeks. I can still fit in some freelance work and be a bit more selective. So, at the moment it's a win, win for me :)
